Difficulties Faced by Prison Guards
Having been released from a detention centre again,  I did not learn any lesson, or get rehabilitated or turn my life around.  I realised that Prison Staff experience depression, and the job can be too much someetimes.  Prison guards are simply not getting adequately compensated for the workload.  Many prisoners are obnoxious,  overbearing, rude and often hostile.
The wage that Prison Guards receive should be in line with Police Officers.
The tedious work of being a Prison Guard consists of:
"Managing Inmates"  Prison guards that work "in the yard" are constantly on their feet,  having to deal with lending a marker crayon (to name common area refrigerated food)  to an inmate, to reminding Inmates that they have appointments with either lawyers / court.
Getting screamed at for not doing the impossible.  Smart-mouthed about in earshot.  the female guards get "male gaze" stared at,  their asses especially (which is sexual harassment),  inappropriate sexual remarks about female guards,  about what they would and wouldn't do(very despicable and inappropriate talk in earshot).
"Backing Up" other Prison Officers,  or keeping the number of staff in an area to prevent "Counter Theft" ,  Is the regular occurance of any given Officer, having received a radio call,  having to run from their post to another yard,  firstly to protect the other officers, and then to help diffuse any violent incidents.   These runs are done around the Prison perimeter,  and not "In the yard".
Prison staff working in "Yards" are flat out for their entire shift.  5 or 6 people have to manage between 30 and 80 inmates from 7 a.m.  until 7 p.m.     Prison Staff "Double Shift"
Management of Paperwork:Regulated once a month inmate conference,   the goals and aims of every inmate  Counting Inmates:  This part of the job is difficult, and the staff get ridiculed for not being able to count.  Often an inmate during morning count will simply not respond,  and the staff have to scream,  and thump on the door for up to 10 minutes ( I have heard them do this many times),  in an attempt to get a sign of life from an inmate who is asleep.   During the 3 or 4 day counts,  there is often incorrect counts,  and a recount of each inmate has to be done.  The count,  where each inmate,  their I.D. card, and where they are is tallied,  is done as part of the punishment for the inmate,  however it is not effective.  Inmates talk through count,  talk back to staff, and continually refuse to stand for count,
Dealing with enquiries:  legal appointments,  family visits,  clothing,  dispensing rubbish bags / cleaning cloths / bleach packets / meals / canteen forms / employment forms / nicotine patch replacements / canteen money enquiriues / adding friends and families onto contacts / phone credits / methadone announcements ('guilty of always asking when's methadone') / mop bucket detergent /
Lawyer and Court conferences are done via Video conferencing,  and the chairs are bolted to the ground.   A guy who was appearing in court via tele court saw his girlfriend flirting with a police officer, and threw the chair he was sitting on at the T.V. screen,  so that's why.
The only funny thing that happens in prison is when there is a count, and someone has their card on them,  and the prison staff ask them to bring their card to the console,  and everyone standing applauds.   Because the person fucked up and didn't hand their card in.
It appears that the Industrial prison complex will continue to need to exist, periodically, for the foreseeable future.   While on going crime (drug trafficking,  drink driving, etc) continues,  a large segment of the prison population appears to be men who have broken restraining orders.  There is a constant stream of men who have had a restraining order placed on them by their girlfriend / spouse,  and,  consequently, said man has broken the restraining order by visiting girlfriend,  often more than once, and is imprisoned for 3-6 months.  There is a need to form men in society from being subservient to their girlfriend / spouse, into men who can firmly and calmly deal with the issues that women and or family often bring.  police put restraining orders who have no problem with manipulating them and putting restraining orders on them.  It is a failing that I have seen in myself, as the traditional role of the male was to provide for the woman.   I recognise the agenda behind the supposed "gender equality striving to equate"
  •  The police only deal with criminals when arresting them.  Once the criminal has been arrested,  prison guards deal with them daily,  continually,  week after week,  year after year.
  • It is evident that the workload of a Prison Officer is more than a person employed by a Policing Department.
  • There are `17 Prisons in Victoria.  Two Prisons are privatised.
  • Due to the privatisation of two Prisons, duty rotation and Prison location placement for Staff are often unreasonable, the travel time,  dis-prorportionate, allocated Prison Staff For the sake of the Either the ownership

To the degree that the police continue to need to change the mindset of Men in society,  the need to address the inequality of salary that exists between police and prison guards.   The prison guard works with the same risk of harm from criminals as a police officer,  and therefore should be paid the same amount.
